Fun Crab Picture Book Launch Grenada

Fun, Fun, One Crab On The Run was launched in Grenada on Nov 30th at the National Museum and was sold out (150 books) in half an hour! I'm extremely grateful for the interest and support of so many who attended, and
thrilled and proud that Grenadians would support arts and literacy in early childhood education with such enthusiasm. We had a wonderful presentation on the importance of reading, I made Fun Crab stickers and colouring pages for the kiddies who attended and had an exhibit on the illustration process and some sample pieces from my portfolio. More importantly, ANOTHER 150 books have been sponsored by Fun Crab patrons (corporate sponsors) to be donated to our pre-primary and primary schools in Grenada! (This handover will be facilitated by the Ministry of Education post- launch)

Fun Crab Press Release

PRESS RELEASE
St George’s Grenada (November 18, 2013)

Launch of Caribbean Picture Book Illustrated by Grenadian Illustrator

‘Fun Fun One Crab On The Run’ is a beautiful, imaginative and useful new children’s board book for age range 3-6 that has just hit the Caribbean market. Published by Little Bell Caribbean (New York), it is the latest title by best-selling author Mario Picayo, who selected Grenadian illustrator Stacey Byer to create the illustrations.  “I was attracted to her use of colour, playful style, and the humor I saw in her work,” explains Picayo, who met Stacey during a visit to Grenada in 2012.

This delightful counting book for young readers follows the characters as they explore, swim, fly, and blossom, while simple rhymes connect the numbers on their journey from one to ten. It is a perfect tool to introduce children to numbers.  A chart at the end of the book lets the reader know the name (common and scientific) of each real Caribbean animal and plant included in the  illustrations, and turns the book into a “find it” game.

The book is already available on the American market and may be purchased online at Amazon.com.

The official Grenada launch for the book (which is a kid friendly event) will take place at the Grenada National Museum on November 30th, 2013 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. To promote the value of art and literacy to early childhood education in Grenada, there will be a presentation on reading picture books, illustrations on display, as well as copies of the Fun Crab Books for sale.
In addition, November is Picture Book Month and to honour this, the illustrator is donating 150 copies of the book to pre-primary and primary schools in Grenada. This is being made possible with the generous assistance of a number of corporate sponsors, including NAWASA, Southern Electrical, EcoDive, Country Cold Store, 3BS, Grenada Pharmacies, Wade Optical, Island Dental, Spice Isle Retreaders, Grand Anse Playgroup, and Sweet Water Foundation, as well as personal contributions from individual donors.  The distribution of these books will be facilitated by the Ministry of Education post-launch.
It was important to Byer that the book has a wide circulation so that Grenadian children have access to the book.  “I often try to include a community element with my art events,” says Byer, who also co-curates the Women Make Art show.  “I think it’s important to showcase art’s wider links to society, culture and education.  Art is essential, not just ornamental.” This free event is open to the general public.

And then suddenly one day there's a book with my name on it...

It's been so long since I last posted. It's so easy to just keep slugging away in the lil' studio, painting to my heart's content and ignoring my social media duties. Though I would like to hiss and claw at the pressures of keeping up with it all, the major silver lining has been me meeting wonderful, diligent creatives and lovers of great art. And so, tantruming aside, I will attempt to make more regular blog posts. :)

Tonight I have something wonderful to announce, a dream that has long been in the making has finally become a reality ... I'm now a published illustrator !

I was hired to illustrate this fantastic counting book Fun Fun One Crab One The Run written by Mario Picayo and published by Little Bell Caribbean. This board book is aimed towards the 3 - 6 yr age group.

To be able to work on a book that I believe will have a positive educational impact on our early learners is just the cherry on top !

I'm now in the process of planning a launch and illustration show for November (egads) so if you would like updates about the Fun Crab Launch please feel free to join my mailing list, located on the right hand side of my blog!

For the first time newbies who are joining the mailing list, as soon as you put in your info you will see a message saying that you have been sent an email. When you receive the email (it sometimes goes to your junk folder) you must confirm that you are subscribing to the Fun Crab list by pressing the link that they send you in this email.

If this option made your head hurt, feel free to join my FB Art page instead, which will also have updates on the launch ! :)

Commissions this month

June has turned out to be the month of art commissions.

A commission means two things: 1.) We artists can eat (say it with me yessssssh ) and
2.) You get to create something personal and important to/for your client.
A full belly and a sense of goodwill = A Happy June.
Hoping everyone has a fun and productive June also ! :D

My first E-book

Well I have just finished illustrating my first ebook called Cassi the Conch !
This story is about a little conch who enters a contest and learns what it really means to be beautiful.

It was a fun, learning experience especially trying to figure out how much space to leave in each illustration for the text ! Eek !
90 % of the work was painted traditionally and then my final touches were digital.
I will definitely post more information when the book becomes available !

My ideas are eating my ideas scribble

I just realized that this is happening to me and it's affecting my productivity. Good news is I'm going to a retreat tomorrow where I will be interacting with foreign elements such as sun and fresh air - yippee ! So in other words if anyone else is stressing about something take a little time off, a little breather and then dive right back in ! (There will be no Tales from the Nest illustration upon the morrow)

Day 16 of the Drawing Challenge: Inspiration

Honestly for me it's the most random things, from a dress pattern, to a line in an 80's song to the surface of a leaf. I note the things that inspire me and then pull them out, combine them, and apply my own spin.

Day 13 of the Drawing Challenge: Comic

Day 11 of the Drawing Challenge: Turning point in your life

My teaching job at the Grand Anse Playgroup.
At this job my childhood was reawakened, not only did this job reaffirm that I was on the right path with my art but also made it a certainty that my work would always connect to children.
In the end I realized that the children taught me as much as I taught them.

Day 7 of The Drawing Challenge: Favorite Movie

Jane Austen's Persuasion (1995 adaptation)
Love this movie/book: it's about second chances, not losing hope and figuring out what you want from life.

Day 6 of the Drawing Challenge: Favortie Book

I have to go with God of Small Things.
It's set in India, it revolutionized the way childhood is portrayed in Asian literature (airport fairy!) and why oppression in society is wrong.

Day 5 of the Drawing Challenge: Best Friend

I'm grateful to be able to count best friends on one hand but I went with my first bestie, my eternal person propper - my sis. I have illustrated this by way of owls.

Day 4 of the Drawing Challenge: Favorite Place

Childhood Treehouse !
The first response was home, but then I remembered this treehouse that a family friend built for my sister and me when we were little. It was plain, a roughly cut doorway, it literally looked like a large doghouse, but to us it was heaven.
And yes the precarious tilt of the house was exactly how we had it !

Day 3 of the Drawing Challenge: Favorite Food

For my favorite food I would have to go with Caribbean green pea soup ! Usually filled with yummy dumplings , carrots, potato and your choice of meat. FYI this taste nothing like canned green pea soup. ;)

Day 2 of the Drawing Challenge: Favorite Animal

Hard one to choose but I finally decided on a piggy.
I remember being obsessed with having a pig as a pet for a few years; for those of you who may get to have a piggy pet in the tropics I have also added some tips on petcare...

Starting 2013 right !

Happy New Year everyone ! So for every month of 2012 I attempted to do the 30 day Drawing Challenge but never even got close to starting it. On Tuesday January 1st 2013 I finally started !

Here is the Drawing Challenge :

And here is my first entry (created yesterday) - Day 1 : Draw Myself, I went with an early morning (just got out of bed) pic complemented with bird and a touch of villainy.
